AFRICA UNITE ITALIANO Distanti in linea d'aria circa 8.500 chilometri, Kingston e Pinerolo sono più vicine di quanto si creda: lo dimostrano gli Africa Unite. O United, com'era al principio, agli albori degli anni '80. Primo contatto fra Bunna e Madaski, nel 1981. La morte di Bob Marley aveva ferito l'immaginazione del mondo e i due scelsero di riferirsi a una della sue canzoni, "AFRICA UNITE" appunto, per battezzare la band. Il debutto discografico è datato 1987: "MJEKRARI" traghetta la fama del gruppo fuori dai confini locali, tant'è che poco dopo, a Roma, inaugurano le grandi collaborazioni, in primis aprendo il concerto della leggenda reggae U Roy. ..Il mini album del 1988, "LLAKA", crea lo spunto per un altro appuntamento prestigioso; l'apertura del concerto di Linton Kwesi Johnson. Di seguito al Palatrussardi di Milano con il principe del ju ju nigeriano King Sunny Adé e a Padova per Amnesty International accanto a Steel Pulse e Revelation Time, quelli di Ruud Gullitt. Dopo decine e decine di concerti e la preparazione nonché realizzazione di "PEOPLE PIE", realizzato nel 1991 gli Africa United suonano ad "Arezzo Wave" e addirittura a Negril, in Giamaica, preceduti dal formidabile Gregory Isaacs. "Nuff respect!", inneggiarono i presenti... Era il momento di diventare adulti: cadde la "d" di United, la banda si consolidò mentre in Italia imperversavano le "posse" e gli Africa entrarono subito in sintonia: prima un'avventura dialettale in "Canté", poi l'esperienza della TO.SSE. Precedenza alla madrelingua nei testi, finalmente: una svolta sancita nel 1993 da.. "BABILONIA E POESIA" con il mondo a portata di mano: Francia, Olanda e Gran Bretagna, ma soprattutto l'Iraq, per il Festival di Babilonia, due concerti in Palestina e la realizzazione de "Il partigiano John" per l'antologia "Materiale resistente", sono una premessa all'imminente nuovo disco: "UN SOLE CHE BRUCIA". Corteggiato dalla Polygram, attraverso il canale Black Out, il gruppo ne accetta le offerte e inaugura il rapporto nel 1996 con "IN DIRETTA DAL SOLE", album live realizzato durante una tournèe al quale segue la pubblicazione de "IL GIOCO". Nel 2000 esce "VIBRA" che onora i precetti fondanti del reggae. L'album apre con "Sotto Pressione" canzone-denuncia contro la pena di morte, di cui viene realizzato con immagini di repertorio, un videoclip dalle atmosfere crude e strazianti. 11 maggio 2001: ventennale della morte di Bob Marley; se fosse vivo avrebbe 56 anni. Esce "20". A dicembre dello stesso anno, vengono ristampati su licenza V2 Music i primi "LLAKA/MJEKRARI", " PEOPLE PIE", "BABILONIA E POESIA" e "UN SOLE CHE BRUCIA", assenti dal mercato da molti anni; raggiungono un significativo risultato di vendita... Da marzo 2000 a dicembre 2001, in circa due anni di tournèe, gli Africa si confermano come una delle band di maggiore successo live: visti e applauditi da oltre 350.000 persone. Il calendario dei concerti si chiude il 31 dicembre 2001 e da gennaio il gruppo si prende una pausa...
A settembre 2002, Bunna e Mada si ritrovano in studio per dare il via alla composizione dei brani che faranno parte del nuovo album: "MENTRE FUORI PIOVE", un disco maturo, fiero della consapevole coerenza degli Africa Unite. "MENTRE FUORI PIOVE", decimo nato in casa Africa, considerando "LLAKA/MJEKRARI" un corpo unico, verrà pubblicato a fine marzo 2003... Il 2004 vede dato alle stampe "UN' ALTRA ORA", best live arricchito da un DVD, che precede, dopo l'indispensabile lungo tour, la pubblicazione di "CONTROLLI" nel 2006, un progetto che abbraccia oltre alle antiche radici la passione per l'elettronica... La voglia di nuove esperienza anche sul fronte delle collaborazioni, sfocia nel 2007 nell'uscita di
"4 RIDDIMS 4 UNITY" dove un gruppo di ospiti italiani ed internazionali canta sulle strumentali 4 brani di "CONTROLLI", donando loro una nuova veste. Arriviamo così, tour dopo tour, al 2008, anno dedicato al "punto della situazione", ovvero a "BIOGRAFRICA UNITE", prezioso cofanetto contenente 2 CD + 1 DVD; perché la memoria va salvaguardata… sempre! In tanti anni di musica, gli Africa Unite hanno ospitato suoni e umori portati da una lunga serie di musicisti che hanno affiancato Mada e Bunna. Gabriele Peradotto > sax ENGLISH AFRICA UNITE, a reggae band from Turin, named after one of Bob Marley's songs and leaded by Bunna and Madaski,that has masterly produced all their albums and also most part of reggae bands here in Italy. They formed in 1981, when R.N.Marley prematurely died. For 25 years AFRICA UNITE have been producing high quality music, their background being top-class reggae; they have played hundreds and hundreds of concerts, have taken part to a good number of international festivals, and have released 11 albums, establishing as one of the most prestigious and popular Italian reggae bands. Their first EP, "MJEKRARI" was released in 1981; self produced, it stands out for its energy its bright sounds, and the brave use of the Italian language. In 1988 AFRICA UNITE released "LLAKA", showing they had grown up musically. With "PEOPLE PIE", released in 1991, the maturation process was finally over. To support the album Africa kicked off a series of successful live Italian and European dates eventually playing in Negril, (Jamaica), where they perfomed at the "De Buss". The following album was released in 1993: "Babilonia e Poesia", is a colorful and powerful album, where lyrics match perfectly with the stunning melodies. The album, released in Italy, France and Benelux received a very warm welcome by the critics and the audience.Then AFRICA UNITE embarked on an Italian and European tour playing over one hundred dates; they also performed in Iraq taking part to the Babylon International Festival during the embargo due to the Gulf War. During 1994 their first two albums "Mjekrari" and "Llaka" were re-released on Cd. AFRICA UNITE kept on touring being recognized as one of the best realities of the Italian and European Reggae scene, taking them as far as Palestine where they performed at the International Festival in Jerusalem and whereabouts. Their 1995 album "UN SOLE CHE BRUCIA" obtained a serious commercial success, raising the interest of commercial radios, after conquering critics and people. This album features fifteen red hot tracks, back to Reggae, Roots and Dub, masterly produced by Madaski. The Italian tour that followed included over seventy dates and during each and every night AFRICA UNITE rose the warm enthusiasm of thousands of people. Then AFRICA signed with Polygram / Mercury, two years later modified in Universal/ Mercury, after the merger of these two Music Industries . They first Mercury release was "IN DIRETTA DAL SOLE", a live album. One track for each year in their career chosen among their best repertoire. In 1997 AFRICA UNITE has produced a new studio album: "IL GIOCO", a new experience in dub, published with a special edition mixed by Mad Professor. "VIBRA" followed in 2000, a great return to the Roots, one song has been written against death penalty. During the tour they've supported the collection of signatures against it. They played about 100 powerful gigs with the enthusiastic participation fo thousands of people. On 10 May 2001, Africa Unite celebrate Marley and their 20th birthday with a special tribute to Him. The performance was composed from two parts: in the first AFRICA UNITE play the emotional songs of the Maestro and in the second their most popular hits. At the end of march 2003, AFRICA UNITE has released "MENTRE FUORI PIOVE", the 10th Album of his carrier, the return to the Indie scene. Intense lyrics, Reggae "inna Africa Unite stylee" has fascinated media and all the fans, another brilliant success for the band. They 've toured in Italy, from april to december,74 live acts. On June,2004 the latest "UN'ALTRA ORA has arrived ,their second live Album, including for free a live Dvd: more than 3 hours of Africa Unite's concert! During 2005 they joned a brand new live project with a 25 string's Orchestra. They played in special venue a collection of their best song, just with vocals and strings. In 2005 Africa Unite has founded their own label and started composing new songs. The new upcoming Album has named "CONTROLLI", based on the sound renovation, a perfect mixture of Dub & Reggae, including special guests such as Natasja and Raiz. "CONTROLLI" will be publiched on 7 of april 2006, on 12 the Band will start the Italian Tour. "4 Riddims 4 Unity" has been released one year later. The album is based on the traditional jamaican concept of remaking songs starting from the "riddim". International and Italian Special Guests has enjoyed the project, such as, Kymani Marley, Alborosie,Princess Julianna, Sergent Garcia and many others. The very latest release is "Biografrica Unite" 2cds+1dvd, a monography of the band with all the most popular hits, rarities and a video collection, including a backstage area. "Biografrica Unite" has been co produced between Universal Musica Italia srl and Africa Unite. A 15 dates promotional tour has followed during summer. At the moment the band has started composing new songs, the forthcoming album will be released during 2009. This summer Africa Unite is having gigs in Italy and Europe.
